Dark Enough - Lauren Belski
“Belski’s Dark Enough is an absolute love song for the euphoric growing pains of youth. It is so funny and heartbreaking and page-turning to follow Emily Banks through her life that a person could almost miss how ferociously smart this novel is about the danger that runs tandem with becoming a sexual being and the kinds of wounds that don’t hurt us any less for going unnamed. I left these pages full of joy and hope and the certainty that I was already missing these characters I loved so much.” – CJ Hauser, The Crane Wife
“In Dark Enough, Lauren Belski evokes the particular loneliness of adolescence, the questions and contradictions that arise on one young woman’s journey toward adulthood. With keen attention to the complexities of human relationships, this ultimately heartwarming debut novel is a raw and honest exploration of a teen’s summer of transformation.” -Helen Phillips, Hum
“Urgent, atmospheric, and effortlessly profound, Dark Enough is a story of girlhood and growing up that is both universally resonant and strikingly original. Emily Banks will have a long life in the minds and hearts of readers.” - Caeli Widger, Mother of Invention
“An exuberant, fiercely funny novel that peers deep into the dark heart of adolescence, illuminating its secret joys and sorrows.” – Jenny Offill, Dept of Speculation

In the summer of 2000, with the Bush v Gore election on the horizon and the horror of Columbine only a little more than a year in the past, nationally-ranked cross country sensation and academic overachiever Emily Banks is coming-of-age in a New Jersey suburb. When a drunk night ends with a confusing sexual encounter, Emily finds herself suddenly thrust down a rabbit hole of humiliation and rejection, unsure whether she’s done something wrong, and at a loss for how to come to terms with her failures.
Centered around a summer science assignment on stargazing, Emily’s story travels from the safe cocoon of a home full of SAT prep books and overprotective parents into the light-polluted slate of the New Jersey night. As friendships she thought were bedrock begin to falter and she finds herself plagued with self-doubt, Emily struggles to navigate the strange territory of high school, where so many moments that go unrecorded embed themselves inside us and take root, defining our lives in ways we can’t predict.
